Two ways to get there

Which one you need depends on whether the walls are open.

New builds & remodelsDEDICATEDRECIRC LINEA separate return line runs from the farthest fixture back to the water heater. A pump, or the tankless unit’s built-in recirc, keeps hot water moving through the loop. Cold stays cold. The right way to do it when the walls are open.
Existing homesGRUNDFOSCOMFORT RETROFITNo new pipe. A Grundfos Comfort pump mounts at the water heater and a bypass valve goes under the sink farthest away; the cold line doubles as the return. Runs on a timer so it’s not cycling all night. Installed in a few hours.
Timer control: runs when you’re home, off when you’re notWorks with tank water heaters and tankless (Navien has recirc built in)Stops running gallons down the drain waiting for hot

Good fit

Long runs from the water heater to the master bathBig single-level homesTankless units that take a while to deliver hot waterAnyone tired of waiting at the sink

Trade-offs

Retrofit: the cold line runs lukewarm for a few seconds right after the pump cyclesDedicated line: needs a return pipe, so it’s a new-construction or open-wall jobAny recirc uses a little more gas or electricity. Set the timer to your schedule

Questions we get

Which one do I need?Walls open or building new: dedicated line. Finished house: Grundfos Comfort retrofit.
Do you put recirc in new homes?Yes. Some builders we work with spec a recirc system in every house.
Is it noisy? No. It’s a small pump at the water heater. You won’t hear it in the house.
Will it work with my tankless?Yes. Navien tankless units have recirc built in and just need the line or the bypass valve.
